Specially Designed Fuel Additive Delivers Toxic Punch

HOUSTON - Known all over the world as a highly effective fuel additive, Biobor JF received additional recognition recently when it was added to the European Community Council's (ECC) prestigious Biocidal Product Directive list.

The ECC list is designed to provide the European community with one centralized inventory of approved products. Although Biobor JF has long been available throughout Europe, addition to the list gives the fuel additive even further validation among a large user group. Likewise, Biobor® JF continues to be available in numerous markets around the globe.

"Long ago, Biobor JF established a large and growing customer base throughout Europe," says Walter Chartrand, vice president and director of marketing for the Hammonds Companies, Inc., manufacturers of Biobor JF. "Of course, we are thrilled to be included in the ECC's list."

Biobor JF is a concentrated liquid fuel additive, used to eliminate Hydrocarbon Utilizing Microorganisms (HUM), or HUM-Bugs. HUM-Bugs are diesel and jet fuel-feeding microorganisms responsible for fuel tank contamination and filter plugging in everything from airplanes to underground fuel tanks. Specifically, HUM-Bugs feed on hydrocarbon fuels such as aviation jet fuels, kerosene, No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuels, home heating oil, marine diesel and bunker "C" fuels.

According to Chartrand, there are more than 250 types of bacteria and fungi that can live in the water bottoms of fuel tanks. Only fewer than a dozen actually feed on the fuel and produce acid waste by-products. Such by-products corrode fuel tanks, pipes, distort rubber hoses and seals, and increase wear on equipment by adding deposits to various engine components. If left untreated, the small percentage of HUM-Bugs can seriously damage diesel-powered vehicles, aircraft or ship fuel systems.

"These HUM-Bugs are only microscopic in size, but they're causing serious harm," says Chartrand.

Fortunately, HUM-Bugs don't have a chance when they come face to face with the microbicide Biobor JF. This proven fuel additive maintains fuel quality by preventing the growth of microorganisms. Biobor JF is recommended and used by a large number of aircraft engine and airframe manufacturers, airlines, marinas, trucking fleets, railroads, bulk storage terminals, fuel suppliers and other users of hydrocarbon fuels and oils who are all exposed to the potential contamination.

The microbicide is simple to use and harmless to the wide variety of fuel system parts, top coatings, sealants and elastomeric materials tested. It's effective, safe to handle and ecologically prudent.

To achieve the greatest success, however, Hammonds recommends regular use of Biobor®JF to prevent the growth of HUM-Bugs. And because of its concentration, only small doses are required. If a contamination already exists, the user should first drain the water bottom and treat the total volume of fuel with a "shock" dosage of Biobor JF.

Biobor JF is used at 270 parts per million (ppm) as a shock treatment in fuel to effect sterilization, and subsequently at 135 ppm as a maintenance treatment to keep the fuel fungus-free. Ideally, the microbicide should be injected with proportion-to-flow additive injection equipment, but can be batch-blended manually. If batch-blended, as in tank trucks or small tanks, Biobor JF should be introduced while the tank is being filled. This will ensure quick and more complete dispersion.

Not surprisingly, the small cost of using Biobor JF far outweighs the cost of repairing engines or related parts damage. At a recommended maintenance dosage of approximately one-half gallon of Biobor JF for every 5,000 gallons of fuel, the expense of using a biocide costs only half a cent for every gallon of fuel treated. The microbicide is available in 16-ounce, quart-size and five-gallon containers and 55-gallon drums.

Biobor JF is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered product with a 30-year proven track record and is environmentally friendly -- a key consideration when comparing it to other microbicides.

The Hammonds Companies is a leading manufacturer of diesel fuel additives and fuel quality products, including FIZZY anti-icing jet fuel additive, Biobor JF, ColdFlo Fuel Improver, Select3 Diesel Fuel Conditioner, and LubriBor Hi-Tech Lubricity Agent.
