Commetrex announces support for TI's new eXpressDSP real-time software technology

November 17, 2000

<%=company1%> announced today its support for Texas Instrument's (TI) TMS320 DSP Algorithm Standard, and its commitment to have its entire library of telecommunications media-processing software eXpressDSP-compliant by April 30, 2000. Commetrex offers an extensive library of telecommunications functions, voice processing, low-bit-rate vocoders, data modems, and possibly the industry's most comprehensive library of fax technologies, including T.38 and I.366.2 real-time packet-based fax.

"Commetrex has been a leader in the movement to make media-processing technologies portable," said Mike Coffee, the company's president. "In 1997 Commetrex founded the MSP Consortium, which has published an open standard for integrated-media multi-stream environments. Our OpenMedia product is the first to support the recommendation. Now, we have the opportunity to offer embedded system designers who are using other media-processing frameworks an algorithm package that makes our intellectual property portable at the algorithm level, not just the framework level."

In the past, the industry did not focus on code reusability. Until recently, DSP applications typically revolved around proprietary technologies instead of standards. Today, however, many DSP applications are based on established standards. This has created a market opportunity for TI third parties to develop, market and distribute commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) algorithms. Since an application often requires the use of several such algorithms, it is feasible to conceive of DSP software frameworks, such as Commetrex' OpenMedia, that can provide the infrastructure that enables multiple algorithms to operate on a single platform. But as the number of these frameworks increases along with the number of algorithms, it is difficult to take COTS algorithms and integrate them into a framework without a significant amount of effort.

According to John Schanzenbach, eXpress DSP platform manager, "TI believes that minimizing integration time will benefit everyone in the development process. The TMS320 DSP Algorithm Standard was created to make DSP algorithms portable between execution environments, and we are pleased that Commetrex, with its extensive algorithm library that supports the TMS320C6000 platform, will support the TMS320 DSP Algorithm Standard."

Texas Instruments Incorporated is a global semiconductor company and the world's leading designer and supplier of digital signal processing and analog technologies, the engines driving the digitization of electronics. Headquartered in Dallas, TX, the company's business also include materials and controls, educational and productivity solutions and digital imaging. Commetrex Corporation, known for its innovations in fax technology, has recently developed the open-communications industry's first platform for system development that supports the industry's two primary standards for open-system environments: the MSP Consortium M.100 software environment for media integration and the ECTF S.100 software environment for application integration. Both products are available with the company's MSP Media Gateway product line featuring the Texas Instruments company's MSP Media Gateway product line featuring the Texas Instruments TMS320C6000 family of DSPs. The MSP Media Gateway products support voice, fax, high-speed data, VoIP and FoIP. Commetrex also extends its support of the communications system developer to the media-processing algorithm level, and is an active participant in Texas Instrument's Third Party Developer Network.
