COSMIC Software is a privately owned company founded in 1983 in Paris, France by Dr. Maurice Fathi and Jean-Pierre Lavandier, two engineers experienced in UNIX systems and embedded development tools. The company was initially setup to market a Motorola 68000/UNIX-based development system to embedded systems developers, including a suite of 16/32-bit C and Pascal embedded development tools developed by Whitesmiths, Ltd., a USA-based company which had started the commercial C compiler business in 1978. In 1984, COSMIC secured the French distribution rights for the Whitesmiths product lines and by 1986 COSMIC had developed its own derivative 8-bit C compiler products, initially based on Whitesmiths compiler technology. These COSMIC-developed compilers were marketed under the Whitesmiths name, on a world-wide basis, through the distribution network set up by Whitesmiths. By 1989, COSMIC had introduced its own embedded debugging products which allowed users of the Whitesmiths embedded compilers to debug application code at the C-level using simulation and remote debugging hardware.

In 1994, COSMIC and the owner of Whitesmiths core technology ended the existing distribution agreement, and COSMIC was established as the sole owner and distributor of COSMIC-developed products. As a result, COSMIC Software Inc. was set up as a direct sales and support office for COSMIC products in North America and in 1996 direct sales and support offices were opened in Germany and the United Kingdom. COSMIC also has representation in the Middle East and Pacific Rim countries.

In 1997, with field-proven technology and extensive expertise, COSMIC is positioned as a company that specializes in embedded software development tools and services for 8, 16 and 32-bit microcontrollers.
