EEMBC Reveals First Benchmark Scores

In a special event hosted by MicroDesign Resources and EDN, the EDN Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC - pronounced "embassy") will unveil the facts behind the scores and the issues affecting the future of embedded benchmark standards. These benchmarks, which are designed to help embedded system designers select microprocessors, microcontrollers, or DSPs for their designs, represent over 40 real-world and synthetic C source algorithms targeting the automotive/industrial, consumer, networking, office automation, and telecommunications markets.

This event, which is open only to registered attendees of the Embedded Processor Forum, will take place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA on Tues., May 4, at 7:30 p.m. However, the first 50 people to RSVP to info@eembc.org will receive a free invitation to attend.

EEMBC also announced that its benchmarks are now available for licensing. The source code suite may be licensed by Real-time Operating System (RTOS) and compiler vendors to help improve their software tools, as well as to EEMBC member companies' customers to aid in selecting microprocessors, microcontrollers, and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). Each EEMBC benchmark score includes a disclosure report explaining how the independent EEMBC Certification Lab (ECL) objectively ran the corresponding benchmark. The disclosure report contains all relevant information regarding the processor, the processor board, and the tool chain.

The EEMBC Certification Lab (ECL) is currently performing certifications for EEMBC members and licensees of the EEMBC source code, as well as for makers of any products that include microprocessors, microcontrollers and digital signal processors (DSPs). ECL will maintain EEMBC's credibility by certifying all benchmark scores and ensuring that they are repeatable and fairly obtained. The lab is to be headed by Alan R. Weiss, former Motorola manager of software technologies and Markus Levy, president of EEMBC and technical editor of EDN Magazine.

For information about joining EEMBC, licensing the benchmarks, or employing the EEMBC Certification Lab, contact Markus Levy at 916-939-1642.
