SAN JOSE, Calif., September 26, 2000 – I-Logix Inc., the premier provider of enterprise solutions for embedded applications development, today announced support for XMI, the XML-based Model Interchange standard, within its Rhapsody visual application development platform. This support will allow companies greater design interaction with their partners and suppliers, regardless of the UML modeling tools in use, removing a significant barrier to enterprise design collaboration. In addition,
I-Logix is introducing a new capability—called Visual Differencing and Merging—that enables developers and development teams to work on the same UML models simultaneously, then merge those models together and easily determine where they were changed. These strategic enhancements will enable Rhapsody users to easily collaborate on an enterprise scale regardless of modeling tool, converting large, disparate teams into a cohesive design group, a major competitive edge in the move toward collaborative commerce.
"Companies today that want to leverage the Web to interact with their partners and suppliers in a more collaborative environment have been constrained by incompatible sets of design tools," said Gene Robinson, president and CEO of I-Logix. "By supporting the XMI standard, we are giving Rhapsody customers the ability to collaborate with different design teams, even in their own organization, that have not standardized on a single visual programming solution. As a leader in the development of UML for real-time, this support of XMI reinforces our commitment to open standards."
The XMI interface will enable developers using Rhapsody to both export UML meta model information from Rhapsody and import UML information from other products which support the standard. With the standard XMI design interchange format, developers are free to exchange design information across tools and leverage the benefits of each individual UML product. Going forward, the XMI standard will also encompass the transfer of graphical information in a standard format.
"Open standards are going to play an increasingly important role as the development process is broadened to include teams across the company, as well as across the company's partners," said Maurice Klapfish, vice president at Venture Development Corporation, a Natick, MA, consulting firm that focuses on the embedded development market. "I-Logix is at the forefront of the XMI movement to enable this broad collaboration, and liberate data from closed UML modeling tools. This is a critical step in the evolution of UML and the move toward truly pervasive computing."
