Insignia's Jeode Technology Allows Snap Appliances, Inc. Developers To Support Application-Specific Customization
Fremont, CA, November 13, 2000 – Insignia Solutions (NASDAQ:INSGY - news), the leading provider of accelerated Java solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, announced today that its Jeode technology will play a fundamental role in the new Snap Server software, version 3.0, which Snap Appliances, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quantum Corporation (NYSE: DSS – news), expects to begin shipping in first quarter 2001. The Jeode platform leverages Sun Microsystems' (NASDAQ: SUNW – news) Java technology to enable Snap Appliances to offer enhanced customization capabilities. Specifically Insignia's patent-pending virtual machine technology will allow independent and enterprise software developers to customize Snap-powered servers into specialized application appliances, such as database servers, communications servers or vertical market applications servers.
Jeode technology initially will be available on the Snap Server 4100 models. The technology will be licensed as a software option through the Snap Appliances website. The Jeode platform is being displayed at COMDEX this week at Snap Appliances booth number 1967 in Hall B of the Las Vegas Convention Center North. In addition, Insignia is participating with Snap Appliances in a press event at 4 p.m. at the Las Vegas Aladdin Resort and Casino in Sapphire Ballroom B.
"Our patent-pending Jeode virtual machine technology is the ideal Java-compatible solution to enable the Snap Server product line with its next generation of customizable appliance products," said Ron Workman, senior vice president of marketing with Insignia Solutions. "We are excited to see our Jeode technology being used for the first time in a network attached storage device and we believe that Snap Appliances' announced use of Java technology redefines the future server appliance market."
"Enabling Java developers to manipulate the features of the Snap Server 4100 will yield applications that we believe have not been equated with the NAS industry," said Anders Axelsson, president and COO of Snap Appliances, Inc. "The addition of the Java technology is a natural progression of extending the capabilities of the Snap Server product line beyond the areas of general storage and file sharing. Insignia's Jeode technology delivers this important functionality with accelerated performance, robustness and full compatibility."
Snap Server 4100
With capacities of 120GB and 240GB in a 1U rack mountable form factor, the Snap Server 4100 easily supports corporate workgroups of 150 or more users and offers excellent data protection or enhanced performance with support for RAID levels 5, 1 and 0. Available at a fraction of the cost of traditional general-purpose servers, the Snap Server 4100 is priced at $2,999 (MSRP) for the 120GB capacity and $4,499 (MSRP) for the 240GB capacity. The Snap Server typically installs in five minutes or less without any disruptions to the network and is the only file server in its class to automatically deliver simultaneous multi-platform, file-sharing support for Windows, NetWare, Macintosh and UNIX/Linux users on the same network.
Snap Appliances has also launched a new Snap Solutions Developer's Program to encourage and assist Java developers to fully utilize the capabilities now offered with the Snap Server. This program will provide developers with a number of benefits, including hardware and software discounts, free technical support, and access to an online developer discussion board. Jeode Platform
The Jeode platform is Insignia's accelerated software implementation of Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW – news) PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications tailored for Internet appliances and embedded devices. At the core of the Jeode platform is the first independently-developed "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine", the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation, the Jeode EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs in roughly the same amount of memory.
Key attributes include:
- A full-featured software implementation compatible with Sun's PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications
- Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization.
- Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of Internet appliance and embedded device developers
- A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on popular RTOS/processor combinations
- World class support, training, consulting, customization and development tools
The Jeode platform is designed to run with a wide range of operating systems and target processors. It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE (including the Pocket PC version), Windows NT Embedded, Windows NT, VxWorks, ITRON and Linux, and processors such as MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4.
Snap Appliances, Inc.
