NetSilicon's NET+Works™ Complete Embedded Platform Network-Enables CAN@net™ through Ethernet and PPP connections

NetSilicon, Inc., the leading provider of integrated hardware and software for intelligent, networked devices, has been chosen by Germany-based IXXAT Automation GmbH, a key provider of products and services for industrial and automotive communications based on the Controller Area Network (CAN), to provide network connectivity for IXXAT's CAN@net product line, with the versatile NET+Works "solution-on-chip."

"IXXAT's innovative use of our NET+Works complete connectivity solution brings great value to the exceptional CAN@net product," said Cornelius "Pete" Peterson, NetSilicon's chairman and CEO. "By providing tightly coupled processing hardware and networking software on a single, integrated chip, NET+Works saved IXXAT the cost and time of figuring out network integration - thereby allowing the company to focus on their unique application and get CAN@net to the market much sooner."

CAN@net is an external CAN interface, which enables an Internet/Ethernet or PPP connection (Point-to-Point Protocol, a protocol for communication between computers using TCP/IP) between the CAN system and a PC. By embedding NetSilicon's Ethernet microprocessor into the CAN@net design, the product provides manufacturers with a way to remotely manage the various applications and processes plant managers use on a CAN. CAN@net allows for centralized management, which significantly saves businesses time and resources.

Main application areas of CAN@net include remote access to CAN systems for service and maintenance, as well as connecting PCs to CAN systems via Ethernet. This eliminates the physical distance constraints normally associated with PC/CAN interfaces, extending the benefits of remote access and management to this valuable manufacturing process application. The on-board microcontroller is designed to handle CAN traffic without data or performance loss even at high baud rates. In addition, the CAN driver VCI (virtual CAN interface) delivered with CAN@net supports all intelligent interfaces from IXXAT by using the same application programming interface (API). Switching between ISA, PCI, PC Card, Parallel Port, USB and Internet is done easily, without any additional software adaptations.

Additional software options like web server, e-mail alerter or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allow the convenient development of specific software for the CAN@net, which meets specific requirements of applications and systems. Together with the available OPC server the gateway can also be used for the integration of visualization systems, and to set up a communication between field and control level for an exchange of process and service data.

"In developing CAN@net, we needed to provide versatile connectivity over Internet, Ethernet and PPP, but it had to be done in a minimum amount of time," said Christian Schlegel, President of IXXAT. "NetSilicon's NET+Works product gave us the connectivity and performance we needed, while reducing our product's development time and cost."
