NEC has developed the Cosmoplasma NP5001MF01 50in plasma display, a thin, lightweight design that allows the use of large screen monitors in applications where the size, weight and power consumption have precluded the use of wide screen CRTs. It is available in the UK through Azzurri Technology.

The technology delivers a viewing angle of nearly 160° making it suitable for group viewing. The 50in diagonal display with 1365 x 768 pixels is compatible with high definition TV and SVGA computer applications and is capable of delivering 16.77 million colours. Previous generation plasma displays have suffered from poor colour purity resulting in unrealistic colour reproduction. NEC have addressed this problem through the use of the capsulated colour filter (CCF) system developed specifically to enhance the appearance and increase colour saturation levels to rival those of CRT's. In addition to improving colour the CCF system reduces reflected light from outside sources increasing contrast and making the images appear purer and fresher even under bright light conditions.

Plasma display technology eliminates the distortion and high magnetic fields associated with conventional CRT's opening up uses in the industrial, medical, scientific and entertainment industries.

By integrating the high voltage drivers NEC have achieved an ultra thin design with a depth of 50mm and weight of 26kgm. Its overall dimensions are 1191mm wide,714mm high and 47mm deep.
