Drawing on the ubiquity of Ethernet and web technologies, NetSilicon, Inc., the leading provider of integrated hardware and software for intelligent, networked devices, and Germany's JUMPtec, a developer of miniaturized computer boards for embedded systems, have combined to bring diskless operation to embedded PCs.

"JUMPtec's selection of NetSilicon to provide a complete connectivity platform for the WEBasDISK system demonstrates the versatility of the NET+Works value-added, integrated approach. Just as NetSilicon's solution-on-chip is deployed in many industrial applications, JUMPtec's embedded PC systems are gaining a great deal of attention thanks to their innovative diskless design, and superior functionality in the demanding industrial environment," said Cornelius "Pete" Peterson, chairman and CEO, NetSilicon. "Network connectivity is an essential element of WEBasDISK's job, so it was a natural fit for us to combine talents with JUMPtec."

By combining NetSilicon's tightly coupled Ethernet microprocessing solution with JUMPtec's miniaturized embedded PC boards, JUMPtec enables embedded PC functionality without need of local hard disks by utilizing available memory resources from a company's Local Area Network (LAN). JUMPtec's WEBasDISK system is ideal for industrial applications where stand-alone operation is required. By connecting to an Ethernet LAN via an integrated drive electronics interface, WEBasDISK derives memory from the network while carrying out data requests via transparent TCP/IP packet transmissions. Flash memory of up to 32 megabytes is available where access to network assets is unavailable.

NetSilicon's NET+Works architecture is a fully integrated, tested and production-ready solution for Ethernet/Internet connectivity, comprised of system-on-chip hardware, operating system, network protocols and services, application programming interfaces (APIs), drivers, development tools and utilities – fully supported and royalty-free. By elevating the traditional hardware-only system-on-silicon approach to a tightly coupled "solution-on-chip," NetSilicon is able to give OEMs a complete connectivity platform that allows design engineers to reduce development costs, increase focus on product design and meet time-to-market demands.

"NetSilicon provides the network connectivity WEBasDISK requires, while JUMPtec gains a tremendous competitive advantage by cutting precious weeks off of system design thanks to NetSilicon's highly integrated, value-added approach," said Johann "Hans" Muehlbauer, CEO, JUMPtec. "Our customers are looking to eliminate development risks and cost, and having NetSilicon embedded in WEBasDISK systems gives us the assurance of a well-respected, tested name behind our products."
