SoftICE reduces debugging time for device drivers by providing powerful features that extend beyond the limitations of the traditional debugging tools. SoftICE has a unique "system-wide" viewing and controlling capability that makes it easy to understand and diagnose the widest variety of Windows device driver problems. SoftICE also provides for debugging over modem or TCP/IP connections, giving you the same system information you have if the remote PC were right in front of you.

Because drivers run in kernel mode, developers can't easily get access to information while they're running. Traditional debugging tools run in Windows, and can't observe and report on actions and events running at the driver level. SoftICE is specifically designed to run between the operating system and the hardware, and can see interactions between drivers, calling routines, and kernel services that aren't possible with an application-level debugger. And SoftICE works on s single PC, eliminating the cumbersome need for a second system for monitoring the behavior on the target system.
